YEAR OF THE BOLLARD & CHARLIE MCALISTER TRIBUTE SHOW:
NEW YEAR’S EVE Early Show (5 - 7pm)
Saint Bollard is the nom de plume of Andrew Choate, a Los Angeles writer and performer originally from South Carolina who explores various facets of absurdity in his writing, in his hilarious spoken word performances, and through his wildly popular Instagram site on bollards. As @saintbollard, Andrew Choate photographs and organizes performances and tours around bollards, which led Slate to declare him "The world's foremost bollard photographer." Choate's writings on music and art have been published in The Wire, Signal to Noise, The Attic, among many others.
Equally baffling and wonderful is the music and art of the late Charlie Mcalister, who sadly passed away at the age of 49 in February of 2018. A resident of South Carolina, Mcalister began releasing cassettes of his original music in the mid-80s, producing over 100 albums over the years and countless paintings, puppets, sculptures, and homemade instruments. Described by his friend Shepard Fairey as a “genuine non-conformist,” Mcalister’s music and art transcend any one genre but always channels low-country charm and a primitive Southern twang. The Mississippi Luau band, featuring members of Alzo and the Acid Achievers—including Amber Dunleavy on theremin, Peter Geddes on trumpet /guitar, Marc Minsker on guitar/vocals, and Tom Murphy on drums—-, will pay tribute by performing some of Mcalister’s most memorable songs.
Doors open at 5pm, music begins by 5:30pm and event ends by 7:00pm. Swing by on your way out to other New Year’s festivities. $5 suggested donation.
