Concert: Talibam! + Audrey Chen, Microkingdom, Chester Hawkins

Saturday October 28th, 8pm.  ~ $10

Talibam! is a 14-year working unit based in New York City, a rhythm section that is at the cross hair of agility, speed, punctuation, and intention.
Talibam! can be described in various ways — as a classic keyboards/drums expanded-jazz duo, as Dadaist provocateurs with an innate love for the history of music, as a theater group, as an electronic ensemble inspired by Stockhausen. Since their inception in 2003, Talibam!’s ultimate goal has been to wed disparate ideologies through proficiency, controversy, inquiry, and compassion.

Talibam! delights in creating music that cannot be pinned down within the safe-spaces of existing genres. With each new album, Talibam! reinvents their methodological palette in order to bolster a fresh clarity of joyous auditory surprise, something their fans have come to depend on. Talibam! focuses on compositional clarity, with reverence for their diverse interest in genre. Forthcoming on  September 22 2017  are two new landmark albums from Talibam! via the legendary ESP-DISK’ label:

Talibam! Hard Vibe featuring Matt Nelson & Ron Stabinsky push the pulse of Motorik rhythm through a Psychedelic Jazz filter. Endgame of the Anthropocene is a dystopian sonic pronouncement of failed socio-environmental memes, and features Talibam!’s emergence into hyperkinetic rhythm-based instrumental/ electronic music.

Audrey Chen - Using the cello, voice and occasional analog electronics, Chen’s work delves deeply into her own version of narrative and non-linear storytelling. A large component of her music is improvised and her approach to this is extremely personal and visceral. Her playing explores the combination and layering of the homemade analog synthesizer, preparations and traditional and extended techniques in both the voice and cello. She works to join these elements into a singular ecstatic personal language.

Microkingdom is Will Redman on drums, Marc Miller on guitar, and John Dierker on saxophone. Improvisers, composer, curators and producers, floating limbs and brains missing the same body. Ten years of intrepid musical cartography: drone music with orchestral percussion, Bruce Springsteen cover with Sam from Future Islands, loop creation for Blacksage, faux retro soul for a film, graphic scores, clearing lobbies and generating complaints at fancy Manhattan hotels, three records and a few tapes of dubbed-out free improv on Friends and other labels, and of course the sweaty and fervent comic cosmic benders that are their live shows. New releases Exotic Package and Return to the Valley of the Jeep Beats coming this fall on Friends Records.
“...universe music spirit language...dodging the pitfall of eclecticism, the demon of distraction. “ - Tiny Mix Tapes
“always pushing for the most extreme bug-out they can achieve.” - Stereogum

Chester Hawkins - active since 1985, formerly Blue Sausage Infant. Teases the balance between pastoral beauty and bitter tension, between levitation and paranoia. This event will be a preparatory session for a recording engagement in Copenhagen: A deep soak in heavy drone and texture from treated lapsteel guitar, elevated to heroic proportions to devastate the senses with claustrophobic glaciers of complex harmonies. An orchestra of loops and layered tones, burning the ego in waves of analog data like the last, fatal note sung by all pilots in their final moment before impact… Thank you for your trust.
