DETAILS:
A night of poetry, incantation, and community.
This event brings together members of the Cheburashka Collective, a growing group of women and nonbinary writers from the Soviet diaspora.
Though scattered across the globe and the U.S., many members of the Soviet diaspora share a love for Cheburashka, a Russian cartoon character who represents both outsiderness and friendship, strangeness and cuteness. As immigrants, émigrés, and refugees, Collective members experience the dual pull of nostalgia and alienation, and their work offers an important counterpoint to expectations of assimilation.
These writers will gather in Washington, D.C., home to a multi-racial, multi-ethnic, and multilingual refugee community, to share poems and dialogue.
