Image is not exactly a presentation of an installation or performance, rather, it is a kind of medium, a coupling of space with sound, a relation of the body to the architecture of the house. An array of continuously sounding objects inside the house form a composite image, this auditory image is shaped by the inherent filters and mirrors created by walls, rooms, floors, and partitions. The objects' sonorous qualities remain fixed with no differentiation of pitch or rhythm, distilling the timbral, transient and spatial elements of the sound as they shift according to the movement of the objects by the artist and the movement of the listeners within the space. This movement of the objects occurs for the duration of the exhibition, rendering new forms, like tones within harmonic space forming a chord or a wave within a medium.
The exhibition is open by appointment daily to individuals or small pre-formed groups, with a performance happening from 5:00pm - 7:00pm or by appointment. Sliding scale / pay what you feel. Masks and information for contact tracing is required. To schedule, email a.leelarkin@gmail.com
Austin Larkin is a composer and violinist focusing on elements of tone within the interstice of fields, symmetries, and patterns. His violin performance and practice is informed by research into dimensions of vibrating bodies. Larkin has worked closely on this research with Eyvind Kang, Jessika Kenney and Jarrad Powell, all whose work and philosophy remain an influence. He has ongoing collaborations with Lori Goldston, with Gust Burns on his Violin Obstructions, and with Zach Rowden. From 2017 to 2018 he lived In Yogyakarta to study karawitan, specifically how the tones dwell and unfold. Larkin has toured extensively performing solo violin, often in combination with microphone and amplification; using both as distinct instruments to draw awareness to the limits and potentials of both and the spectrum of possibilities between; drawing on contrast, combination, and gradation as compositional material. His compositions and installations have been featured at festivals including Corridor, Yellow Fish, UMBRAL, and Radiophrenia. He lives in New Haven, CT.
