Seminar: The Desperate Poetic Concept of the Killing Joke; or, How to Manage Anxiety as the Walls Come Tumbling Down…

Funny enough for you? – a world in disarray. The laughter you share in dark times is indistinguishable from crying.

Based on an in-progress poetic essay by Magus Magnus, this seminar explores the history and concept of the “Killing Joke” – as a stimulus for creativity and spiritual resilience amidst the present chaos. With talks and presentations opening into roundtable discussion, Magnus traces the “Killing Joke” as a secret shadow through pop culture, from Monty Python, through a band of the same name steeped in esoterica still uncompromising after 40 years, to the Batman comic by Alan Moore that has had such an influence on later Joker incarnations, here to be studied as part of the Trickster/Evil Clown archetype.

The specific topic of the Killing Joke provides an anchor for further workshop-style exploration, a catalyst for creativity and catharsis – shoring up the spirit during crazy uncertain times. Distilled from a four-part series going in depth into this concept and applying it to the creative process, this one-off seminar is an introduction to ideas and approaches you should know about – an elixir for Life and Soul Affirmation no matter the state of the world. As participatory as you like, along with shared hilarity and intensities through our viewings of media connected to the concept of the Killing Joke, you’ll be offered exercises and prompts for art and writing, and experimental ritual for spiritual resurgence.

Let’s get through confinement, oppression, and contagion with free spirits intact and inspirations unleashed.

Magus Magnus is a poet, writer, and, in recent years, immigrant rights advocate active in the nation's capital. Books include Verb Sap, Idylls for a Bare Stage, Heraclitean Pride, and The Re-echoes, as well as an eBook available exclusively on Kindle, The Free Spirit. His works of poetry, theater, and creative philosophy incant a new dynamic for rising above the chaotic present. www.magusmagnus.com
