Seeking Artists/Musicians and Participants for “Art Doulas” Collaborative Project

In this project, participants will provide a prompt to an artist or musician to be used to create a work of art or music. Participants can be (but need not be) artists or musicians themselves. The concept is that artists and musicians serve as ‘doulas’ by giving voice to the feelings of the ‘prompters’, who may not have access to the same artistic tools.  The idea is inspired by the Telephone exercise, the Disquiet Junto, and Naviar Haiku.

Rhizome DC is searching for both prompters and doulas:

Prompters: using this form, please submit a prompt in the form of a short written expression (as little as a word or a few sentences), a photo or drawing, or a sound. It can describe a feeling, a situation, or anything meaningful to you the prompter. You may submit anonymously or with your name. Rhizome DC reserves the right to reject prompts that are (e.g.) bigoted or otherwise disrespectful. You are encouraged but not required to make a donation to Rhizome DC.

Doulas:.using the form, please provide your contact information and preferred medium. In line with the general mission of Rhizome, we especially encourage experimental approaches. In addition to a work of art or music, you will be requested to produce a brief description of your accompanying process.

General process: the links are open to prompters and doulas until midnight on Thursday December 31, 2020. Doulas will then be matched with prompts and will have one month (until January 31, 2020) to produce a work of art or music inspired by the prompt. Rhizome will use these works to populate an online display matching prompts with works, with a brief description of the process used to produce the work.
