These mixed media works, which include the application of found text, chance operations, and the iPhone’s auto-text feature, explore the presence of language in daily life, in its external form, as a visual and verbal mode of communication, and as it functions internally, as the shape and boundary of our thoughts and our interpretations of reality. How does language mold our understanding of the world and what does it hide from us? How does it bind our interior selves to the overarching systems that define the way we live our lives?
Artist Statement:
I’m a mixed media artist, working mostly at the intersection of painting and sculpture. Through my work, I explore the potential and the limitations of human communication. This has come in the form of interactive work, meant to encourage a collaboration between participants and the artist, as well as between participants and each other, hoping to be as much a social and physical experience as a visual or intellectual one. More recently, as the potential for social engagement has been heavily limited, my work has been preoccupied with text and language, exploring how it functions externally, as a material for communication, and internally, as a mode of thought.
