Creative Game Development
The focus of this course is to empower students to create video games in a way that allows them to focus on the creative aspects of game creation: art, sound, and design. This is the perfect course for the creative who wants to express through the truly limitless medium of video games.
We will be using Construct 3, a full-fledged game development platform designed for beginners. The course will focus on a single class project: each student will create a unique 2D game with shared core mechanics. The course will culminate in a "game showcase" where every student will have an opportunity to show off their work. By the end of the course, the student can expect to:
- Produce a unique, playable game for the web browser
- Learn the basics of ‘pixel art’ for creating game environments
- Use keyboard or gamepad to explore a 2D world of their own creation
- Create and use their own animations
- Integrate sound effects or music
- Share your completed game with others!
Some notes about the course:
There are only eight seats available for this course. Open to ages middle school to adult.
No programming experience is required for this course. Both Construct 3 and this course are designed for non-programmers (but those with programming experience will find plenty to learn from the unique challenges of game development.)
Completing the course project will require the student to spend their own time on the project outside of class. I will be available to help and will hold some open help sessions (ie online office hours) between classes. This will be a challenging course.
The course will have you working through a web browser; a desktop or laptop computer is recommended, though it will be possible to follow along on a tablet. The cost of the course includes the small subscription fee for Construct.
All class sessions will be recorded on Zoom and will be recorded.
Sliding-scale tuition is available in some cases. Please contact the instructor for that or any other questions: pancieramike@gmail.com
