PERFORMANCES: Jaap Blonk / Steve Benson / Jaap Blonk+Bonnie Lander+Samuel Burt

Sunday October 9 * 7pm * TICKETS

Jaap Blonk (born 1953 in Woerden, Netherlands) is a self-taught composer, vocalist and poet. His unfinished studies in mathematics and musicology mainly created a penchant for activities in a Dada vein, as did several unsuccessful jobs in offices and other well-organised systems.

In the early 1980s he discovered the power and flexibility of his voice, and set out on a long-term research of phonetics and the possibilities of the human voice.

At present, he has developed into a specialist in the creation and performance of sound poetry, supported by a powerful stage presence and an uninhibited feeling for improvisation. He performs and gives workshops worldwide on a regular basis.

With the use of live electronics the scope and range of his concerts has acquired a considerable extension.

To this date Blonk’s music has appeared on 30 CDs with his own Kontrans label; other recordings as well as books with his visual work have been published in several countries.

Steve Benson has written under the sign of poetry, most often orally and textually, since 1966. He has lived in downeast Maine since 1996, where he’s worked as a small-town clinical psychologist. His recent books include a collaboration with Suzanne Stein (DO YOUR OWN DAMN LAUNDRY, gauss.PDF), a collaboration with The Spatter Trio that includes a CD recording (It's a Stool Pigeon Universe, Rastacan Records), and the self-published AS IT HAPPENS. What This Is is forthcoming from Chax Press. Benson shares links to his work products that are accessible on-line through http://www.stevebensonasis.com/. His summer 2022 reading from his essays for The Grand Piano series is archived at Grand Piano TV.

Immersed in the eclectic world of new and experimental music, Bonnie Lander has performed in a great variety of concert programs, with a wide selection of collaborators in improvised music, new opera, new chamber music, and composition. Versatile, dramatic, with a “stratospheric legato” and a “signature ability to embody a seemingly endless supply of vocal timbres and personalities,” Lander combines an intuitive, spontaneous use of the voice with resonant operatic technique, in order to create a performance experience that is virtuosic, intimate, and sonically overwhelming.

Samuel Burt is a composer and improvisor in Baltimore, Maryland. His music focuses on processes and concepts that risk failing in order to discover moments of bewilderment. He curates music at the High Zero Festival, the Red Room, and Worlds in Collusion. He plays clarinets, synthesizers, and the daxophone. He teaches music composition at Towson and Johns Hopkins Universities.

Burt is an active improviser in the Mid-Atlantic. Recent collaborations include Coyfish and Lightning Golem which was featured in performances by GRIDLOCK Dance. His compositions range from solo works to orchestra and algorithmically generated musique concrète to synthesis.
