Daniel Levin + Melvin Bauer / Simone Baron / Gong/Baiza

Monday November 20 * 7pm * TICKETS

Daniel Levin + Melvin Bauer have made music together in a variety of contexts, appearing in performance at Middleheim and Citadelic Festivals in Belgium, and in a range of venues throughout Portugal. This performance at Rhizome will be the final stop on their US tour, culminating in live and studio recording sessions to gather material for their first duo record. Levin and Bauer endeavor to find through their improvisational practice, in the words of J. Krishnamurti, "freedom from the known". That is, they seek not to demonstrate evidence of their well-developed rapport and shared musical language in performance, but rather, to find new vistas unknown to them before manifesting them through the act of collective improvisation.

Simone Baron is a polyglot pianist, accordionist, improviser and composer whose work “ego-less, genre agnostic and without expectations” (JazzTimes) engages curiously and charismatically with a broad spectrum of idioms. Educated at Oberlin and Tel Aviv University and joyfully de-educated at festivals and performances across Europe and the Americas, Simone has won grants, fellowships and residencies from Chamber Music America, South Arts, Maryland State Arts Council, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, the Hambidge Center, Sacatar Foundation, iPark, Strathmore, VCCA, ArtOMI, UMD, Avaloch Farm, the Banff Centre, and Spectrum Toronto. In 2016 Simone founded Arco Belo, a diasporic chamber music ensemble. Simone is a Victoria Artist and plays a Poeta XB Accordion, and is a founding member of the Boulanger Initiative.

Gong/Baiza - Max Gong and Darien Baiza are an improvising duo based in Baltimore, Maryland. Darien, a drummer known for his propelling utilization of timbral and rhythmic textures. Max, a multi-instrumentalist whose interests are movement and stasis, human imperfections, and non-hierarchal collaboration.
