The solo music of fiddler Mike Gangloff is "augmented Appalachia," Bill Meyer wrote in Magnet this year -- droney meditations that weave together improvisation, melodic composition, and traditional airs. A founder of Pelt, Black Twig Pickers and Eight Point Star, Gangloff has increasingly focused on unaccompanied sets playing a hardanger-style violin equipped with sympathetic strings or an octave fiddle that shifts the sound down to cello territory. His newest releases are the album "Evening Measures," released at the end of last year by VHF Records, and a 7-inch shared with New England guitarist Liam Grant that came out on the Sound-o-Mat label earlier this year.
Pergola is the work of Baltimore-based fingerstyle guitarist Todd Shelar. His music is influenced by American Primitive Guitar players, impressionism, minimalism, Renaissance through Modern classical guitar and various folk music traditions. For Pergola’s Rhizome set, music from a new body of work titled “Moon Glows The Same” will be performed.
Jon Camp is a fingerstyle guitarist and composer from the DC region. Jon blends twang, drone, and melody into a cohesive whole that is exploratory without forsaking the hook. Of Jon’s recent self-titled release on Centripetal Force, Andy French of Raven Sings the Blues said, "From fingerpicked folk to broken dawn blues, glycerine Loren Connors contemplation, bluegrass breezes and non-trad tributaries, the album doesn’t settle. With so many muses, Jon keeps things from swerving between impulses, finding a common beam between the hues in his wheel of colors." For Jon’s set, he'll perform in a variety of solo, duo, and trio configurations featuring Dave Jones (The Caribbean) and billmates Todd Shelar and Mike Gangloff.
