Rebecca Perez - Notes on Lasting Change

In my work, I investigate the connection between trauma and healing. My experiences with trauma and the process of healing have taught me to be attentive to what’s happening inside me. It’s also led me to bigger questions about the trauma and body connection. I am interested in how trauma changes the body, as well as the shifts that take place in relationships and communities.

Trauma changes us in both immeasurable and measurable ways. My paintings interpret these as sweeping brush strokes and gestural lines to mimic the movement and energy of the trauma and body relationship. I chose to paint on raw canvas and paper because these delicate and flimsy surfaces bring to mind the fragility of our bodies.

The result is art that changes a personal and private discourse into a public one.
