Susan Alcorn
One of the world’s premiere exponents of her instrument, Susan Alcorn has taken the pedal steel guitar far beyond its traditional role in country music. Having first paid her dues in Texas country & western bands, she began to expand the vocabulary of her instrument through her study of 20th century classical music, visionary jazz, and world musics.
Though known for her solo work, she has collaborated with numerous artists including Pauline Oliveros, Eugene Chadbourne, Chris Cutler, the London Improvisors Orchestra, the Glasgow Improvisors Orchestra, Joe McPhee, Ken Vandermark, Nate Wooley, Ingrid Laubrock and Leila Bourdreuil, George Burt, Evan Parker, Michael Formanek, Zane Campbell, and Mary Halvorson among others. In 2017 she received the Baker Artist Award and in 2018, along with saxophonist Joe McPhee, the Instant Award in Improvised Music.
Gary Rouzer & Daniel Barbiero
Sounds for strings and interactive live electronics. As beautiful as the chance encounter of a double bass and a series of pedals on a folding table.
Gary Rouzer: electronically alienated reflections of acoustic bass
Daniel Barbiero: double bass/prepared double bass.
Gary Rouzer was born in Washington DC and works in the area between free improvisation and composition. His focus is on electro-acoustic sounds and the relation between musician and listener within the performance space while exploring noise, silence, texture, and abstract sound. He is an active member of the DC experimental music scene and has performed at Sonic Circuits, Electric Possible, Fringe Festival, Artomatic, and the Kennedy Center in addition to performances in Baltimore, NYC, Hamburg, and Berlin. “The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity.” – Dorothy Parker.
Daniel Barbiero is a double bassist, composer, and writer in the Washington DC area. He has performed at venues throughout the Washington-Baltimore area and regularly collaborates with artists locally and in Europe; his graphic scores have been realized by ensembles and solo artists in Europe, Asia, and the US.
