SU$HI has a sound so singular that it can rarely be categorized into one thing. The best way to describe it is sci-fi jazz. Originated by Puerto Rican multi-hyphenate artist Gían Pérez during his time at the University of Michigan's School of Music, Theatre, & Dance, SU$HI has been described as "pura furia". Pure fury. Blending elements of experimental rock, noise, drone, free improvisation, jazz, hip hop, punk, blues, and astral projection, this trio explores the stretches of each musicians' creativity and the sonic possibilities of being alien. But most of all, it challenges the way we define jazz.
Our players have played all over, including Newport Jazz Festival, Smalls Jazz Club, Nublu, SFJazz, 55 Bar, Lowlands Bar, Downtown Music Gallery, 360 Record Shop, Knitting Factory, Hart Bar, Detroit Jazz Festival, Blue Llama and more. And established rock venues like El Coliseo Roberto Clemente in Puerto Rico, Rockwood Music Hall, Bowery Electric, Heaven Can Wait, The Broadway, Berlin Under A, and more. The musicians in SU$HI have worked with artists across all genres like Caroline Davis, Marc Edwards, Jaimie Branch, Elijah Shiffer, Kevin Sun, Adam Neely, Brandon Seabrook, Nora Stanley, Argentinian rock staple Enanitos Verdes, Puerto Rican trumpetist Humberto Ramirez, pop artists like Demi Lovato, Danielle Ponder, members of Depeche Mode, Danny Wilson, and drag queen Olivia Lux. We've played stadiums and basements alike, all across the country. Spanning genres, forms, mediums, and styles, this trio is the stew of all of that.
ZĀM is the guitar-bass-drums trio of Anthony Pirog, Andrew Colwell, and Dan Sharnoff.
