Toshimaru Nakamura + Gene Coleman + Nick Millevoi // Vernal Scuzz // gen/loss

Friday October 18 * 7pm * $15-25 * TICKETS

Toshimaru Nakamura's instrument is the no-input mixing board, which describes a way of using a standard mixing board as an electronic music instrument, producing sound without any external audio input. Nakamura pioneered this approach to the use of the mixing board in the mid 1990s. He will be joined by composer/bass clarinetist Gene Coleman and guitarist Nick Millevoi.

Vernal Scuzz is a free-form band from Alabama, USA. Wild mixtures of improvisation, themes, songs and tape experiments played by Jasper Lee, Mika Carpenter, and James Elliot, on bass, zithers, euphonium, electronics, tapes, drums & words. They pursue an evolving sound informed by cut-ups, noise, avant-folk, and punk. Members of the group have also collaborated with Johnny Coley, Joel Nelson, Sister Sniffle, Turner Williams Jr., Walker Yancey and others.

Somewhere between proto-punk and primeval ceremony, the music is a vehicle for navigating the murk of media litter. Crackles of radio noise and tape collage meld with zither and industrial pipes...diegetic sounds that build an atmosphere and then burst suddenly into song. Words emerge sometimes and sometimes the ineffable just takes hold.

Vernal Scuzz combines the group’s idiosyncratic concepts with a visceral playing style that is charged & unpredictable. Their first album will be out in October 2024 on Sweet Wreath.

gen/loss is a music and multimedia art project consisting of trumpeter Andrew Toriello, percussionist Max Glazier, and electronic producer & video artist Sam Brooks. Fusing electroacoustic & free improvisation techniques, Reichian minimalism, and contemporary electronic production, gen/loss seeks to explore and distort the ephemerality of digital existence in the post-information age.
