An evening of experimental visuals and sound in quad with:
RM Francis (Seattle)
Earthroom (Philadelphia)
Energy Runner (DC)
Null Phi Infinity (Baltimore)
Tangent Universes (Baltimore)
RM Francis (@morton_failglob)
is a Seattle-based artist working with synthetic sound and language via recording, performance, and installation. He has presented work at the Mills College Center for Contemporary Music (Oakland), Gray Area (San Francisco), Kolonia Artystów (Gdańsk), as well as clubs, auditoriums, warehouses, and galleries throughout North America. His practice foregrounds computation-based compositional strategies, with a current emphasis on methods that exploit discrepancies between human and artificial auditory systems. His oeuvre spans multimedia work incorporating sound, video, performance, and chocolate (Hyperplastic Other, nada, 2017), investigations of historical computer synthesis methods (A Taxonomy of Guffaws, ETAT, 2020), procedural text works for a chorus of synthetic voices (Every Single Person Has Some Muscle, Flea, 2022), and hallucinatory duets between dictation apps and deep learning networks (pedimos un mensaje, Superpang, 2023). In addition to his solo projects, in recent years he has collaborated with Jack Callahan & Jeff Witscher, Jung An Tagen, and farmersmanual, among others.
Earthroom (@e_a_r_t_h_r_o_o_m )
as Earthroom, Philadelphia-based musicians Tyler Pursel and Morgan Evans-Weiler craft soily compositions that feel at once timeless and cutting edge. Pulling from styles ranging from ambient to jazz to neoclassical, the band’s output calls to mind acts like The Books, Fuubutsushi, and Sung Tongs era Animal Collective. The duo’s partnership is typically delicate and warm — the aural equivalent of flower petals cascading in the wind. Pursel got his start gigging in the Philadelphia DIY scene, playing a myriad instruments in various hardcore and punk bands. But he slowly distanced himself from those rough-hewn roots, becoming infatuated with the fluorescent electronic sounds of Autechre, Boards Of Canada, and Jon Hassel. Multi-disciplinary Evans-Weiler comes from a more traditional creative background, and cut his teeth playing in the ensemble Ordinary Effects. Additionally, he has worked with an impressive cast of composers, including Alvin Lucier and Christoph Schiller. Evans-Weiler is also an accomplished visual artist, and his stormy, modern work has been displayed at esteemed galleries across the United States. (-Ted Davis)
Energy Runner (@energy_runner)
Energy Runner (aka Zach Hosale) originally hails from Milwaukee, Wisconsin but has lived in the DC/Maryland area since January 2016 and is a member of DC Modular Society. Hosale's early music experiences were as a guitar player in various psych/indie/experimental bands. Starting in the summer of 2018 he dipped his toe into the semi-modular synth waters and since then has fully plunged into the murky, modular depths. Energy Runner is a solo project that allows Hosale to combine both of these backgrounds while also exploring his interest in ambient, kraut rock, and experimental music. Currently, all of Energy Runner's available catalog can be found via his bandcamp (energyrunner.bandcamp.com).
Null Phi Infinity (@nullphiiinifinity)
Ryan Dunn/Null Phi Infinity is a Baltimore based interdisciplinary artist and musician exploring hybrid techniques for creating both visual and sonic art. They are interested in the connection and translation between sound and visuals and the process of creating generative systems that shift and grow on their own over time.
Tangent Universes (@tangent_universes)
Using field recordings, modular synths, and guitar drones, Carolyn Zaldivar Snow creates immersive soundscapes exploring collective memory. She curates the Singles Series with the label Mystery Circles and is part of the Creative Advisory Committee for Sound Scene, hosted annually at the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum.
