Dear Future Child is a documentary project that centers on letters written by four trans and gender non-binary individuals to their imagined future children. Through use of animation, archival material, and music composition, the film offers an entry point into the largely diverse experiences of contemplating parenthood outside of the gender binary. The film is currently in a draft form and will likely be further edited to match its future artistic home.
Following the screening at Rhizome, the film's directors will facilitate a participatory experience for interested attendees.
A note from the filmmakers:
Parenting is an important culmination of gender dynamics- a place where ideas of living and existing in our bodies are readily shared and reified. As a non-binary couple, we work through everyday the beauty and challenges of holding our queerness, outward presenting bodies, socializations of gender, and different cultural backgrounds all together, and all at once. In these navigations, we think about what it would be like to parent together and how these challenges would map onto the transformative experience of becoming co-parents.
