cenOte / knives of spain / TL0741 / Outboard

Thursday September 12 * 7pm * $10-20 * TICKETS

cenOte - The word cenote originates from the Mayan dz’onot, meaning "a cave with accumulated water”; these subterranean lakes were considered portals to the underworld.  The NC-based experimental improvisation duo of Gregory Hoffman and Gwen Young map a sunken dominion, layering eclectic acoustic and electronic timbres.  Using prepared instruments, extended techniques, circuit bent toys, record players, analog synths, electronics, and anything else within reach, they create otherworldly, surreal soundscapes.

knives of spain is 21st-c trobairitz Gwen Young, a NC-based solo artist whose sonic terrain spans delicate songcraft to opaque experimentation.  Her sound "braids aspects of folk and the psychedelic avant-garde, minimalism, electronic experimentation and sonic mood painting,” and “can either lull or put you on edge.”  (J. Adamian, YES! Weekly).  Live, her sets feature instruments such as flute, sitar, analog synths, and guitar, with voice, original audio, and electronics.

Patrick Gillis began performing as TL0741 (NoVA) in January 2005, presenting structured improvisations for analogue modular synthesizer and effects combined with pre-recorded material. Explored on six releases through 2019, the drones, unstable automata, and inharmonic gestures harvested from the electrons create a transient universe of unreliable  premonitions and fragile possibilities.  "For previous outings, I may have likened TL0741 to an action painter like Jackson Pollock as a way of accounting for his very hands-on way of working; but now I find the 2019 model is more refined, more considered; no less abstract, but the action painting and gestural work has now given way to a very concentrated and focused way of working." ~ Edward Pinsent, The Sound Projector  https://www.facebook.com/TL0741/   https://tl0741.bandcamp.com/

Outboard is a guitar drone duo from Washington, DC. Christopher Mathews-Larson (Grave Nature, Youth in Government) and Greg Mercer play a blend of ambient, space rock, shoegaze, and noise. The fewer the chords, the better.
