For strong readers with a philosophical and political science streak, ages 15-18, an Environmental Reading Group covering some of the environmental movement’s “greatest hits” from Chief Seattle to Greta Thunberg, complete with challenging ethical questions (sometimes case studies) such as:
What exactly do we mean by Nature, and do we include humans and human behavior?
What exactly is technology and when is it “bad” or “good”?
What is the balance between individual rights and community rights? (Or an individual species’ rights over an ecosystem’s health.)
We will also learn to discern the racist/nativist subtext that sometimes sullies the environmental movement, past and present.
Note: This is a Socratic seminar— cooperative argument between students and challenging texts— but it is not an arena for debating the reality of humanmade climate change.
