Middle School Close Reading Seminar on Virtue

For 12-14 year olds with a philosophical streak and strong reading skills, a lively Socratic seminar exploring texts both ancient and modern on the theme of Virtue, ie, what does it mean to be a good person? Together we'll consult everyone from Abraham to Buddha to Peter Singer and discuss how and whether their ideas apply today. Students practice cooperative argument with texts and peers, refine their own opinions, and practice the life-skill of close reading.

About the instructor: Anna Josephson is a homeschooling parent in the District. She grew up in Alaska, where she received Socratic seminar education starting at age 12. In later years, she received a Master's in Environmental Policy and Planning from MIT. She is a published author currently shopping her first novel.
