and featuring

Marshall Trammell's Black Fighting Formations: Simultaneous Multi-Dimensionality

We are pleased to announce the launch of Praxis of Resistance, the Rhizome residency of Dr Thomas Stanley, with a special duologue and modular composition featuring bay area drummer-activist Marshall R. Trammell.  Born out of the focused and fruitful discussions that have occurred at Rhizome in the spaces before and after performances, this series is intended to provide a forum for artist-activists to share their ideas about art as transformational and existential struggle, or to quote Trammell, "given the time, given what is at stake, we need to weaponize our Arts and quit waiting for systems of oppression to go away on their own."

Bay Area-based Archivissionist, Marshall R. Trammell, has developed “Black Fighting Formations: Simultaneous Multi-Dimensionality” as a platform for the exegesis of indigenous technologies, and as a performing Ethnomusicology/Political Education and compositional module based in African diasporic sensibilities in rhythm, time, and pedagogy. Trammell combines the research stills of the archivist + the percussionist in Music Research Strategies, a platform for critical inquiry, action, and solidarity. Mr. Trammell spearheads BFF in the Bay Area + Baltimore/DC, the Heritage Hall Research Group in Guelph, Canada, & the Indexical Moment/um research and performance series in San Francisco.

He is formerly the percussionist with Black Spirituals. He has performed with Saul Williams, Roscoe Mitchell, Pauline Oliveros, India Cooke, Jon Jang, Francis Wong, Wadada Leo Smith, John Tcichai (Netherlands), Kade Twist, Mogauwane Mahloele (South Africa), David Murray, Dohee Lee (South Korea), Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, Lisa Harris and many more.
