An Afternoon of Exploratory Guitar: Dave Heumann / Max Ochs / Jon Camp

Saturday December 17 * 3pm * TICKETS

Dave Heumann is a founding member of Arbouretum, Human Bell, Coil Sea, Heumann Homan Highway, The Sea Caucus, and The People's Longband. His latest solo record, Guitar Tapes Vol 1, is available now on Sun Cru. At once transportive, meditative, and grounding, Guitar Tapes Vol 1 integrates moments of serene observance with up-tempo exhilaration, drawing you forward through wooded footpaths and forested foregrounds that dissolve into sloping fields and megalithic horizons. For Dave's Rhizome set, he'll be joined by drummer Mike Kuhl.

Growing up in the Annapolis area and attending University of Maryland with friend and labelmate Robbie Basho, Max Ochs contributed two tracks for the 1967 "Contemporary Guitar" on John Fahey’s Takoma label. Inspired by his friend Fahey, Ochs developed his own interest in fingerstyle guitar, learning from one of the masters, Mississippi John Hurt, during a one-month residency in Ochs’ New York apartment when Hurt reappeared on the folk scene in 1964. Ochs was also performing with the legendary band, Seventh Sons, founded by Greenwich Village mainstay and early folk innovator Buzzy Linhart. Seventh Sons were a massively popular NYC band during the years of 1962-1964, recording tracks for Capitol Records for their debut record which was scrapped after Ochs left the band and New York. Ochs has continued recording and performing in his spare time, releasing music on the Fonotone and Tompkins Square labels.

Jon Camp is a fingerstyle guitarist and composer from the Washington, DC region. Jon blends twang, drone, and melody into a coherent whole that is exploratory without forsaking the hook. Of Jon’s recent self-titled release on Centripetal Force, Andy French of Raven Sings the Blues said, "From fingerpicked folk to broken dawn blues, glycerine Loren Conners contemplation, bluegrass breezes and non-trad tributaries, the album doesn’t settle. With so many muses, Jon keeps things from swerving between impulses, finding a common beam between the hues in his wheel of colors." For Jon’s Rhizome set, he'll perform in a duo setting with drummer Scott Verrastro (Kohoutek, Jeffrey Alexander & the Heavy Lidders).
