Please join us for an evening of work by Anna Kipervaser presented in 16mm film projection.

How a Sprig of Fir Would Replace a Feather (2019, 8min, Silent, 24fps, 16mm, United States)
Taking its title from Charles Altamont Doyle, the film is a meditation on ritual, at once a labor of love and of pain, of parting. A taxonomy of the investigation of love, of becoming. In perpetual beginning. In perpetual ending. Coming into vision, into the present, a leaving. A leaving.

Next Her Heart (2023, 12min, Sound, 24fps, 16mm, United Arab Emirates)
Eternal recurrence and wisdom undone. The end or the beginning. Who are we that we. One and the same are the shadow cast and its cause.

A hypnotic journey through the seven valleys on the way to reach the abode of the Simurgh.

Бабушка Галя и Дедушка Аркадий // Grandma Galya and Grandpa Arkadiy (2023, 5min, Sound, 24fps, 16mm, Ukraine / United States)
A jovial and dreamy rumination on love. On time passing. On what we collect, what we hold on to, and how we maintain connection to homeplace, to ourselves.

The Order of Revelation: 23-30 (2017, 28min, silent, 18fps, 16mm, United States)
The Order of Revelation is a long-form, multi-part, silent 16mm film translating / transliterating the Quran from Arabic to Visual in the order it was revealed, rather than the order in which it was canonized. The project reclaims Visual as a Language and challenges the way translation prioritizes semantic meaning over considerations such as form fidelity. It asks whether the revelatory nature of the Quran rests solely in its semantic content, or if revelation can be experienced on account of connections, collisions between letters, between sounds. Before the Quran was canonized, it was transmitted orally through recitation; thus, the medium of translation for The Order of Revelation is Kodak 3378 black-and-white sound-recording film, used here to capture images. The structure expands with each surah causing viewers to learn how to “read” the film, accounting for the development of language during the 23 years the Quran was revealed, while adhering to the rules of the recitation of the Quran. Much like several surahs [or chapters] of the Quran are often recited publicly - rather than the whole book, so too different sections of the film are screened separately and in various groupings. This is the translation of chapters 23-30 of the 114 that make up the Quran.

And By The Night (2017, 10min, Silent, 18fps, 16mm, United States)
After a period of no revelations, Surah al-Duha was revealed to Prophet Muhammad, stating that God had neither forsaken nor forgotten him. And to be patient. The film is also a response to my abortion.

When It Is Still (2018, 10min, Silent, 18fps, 16mm, United States)
A response film to And By The Night. An enactment of transmutation, of the animation of the previously inanimate, the dead, the unborn. A rebirth of the self.

With The Tide, with the tide (2022, 3min, Sound, 24fps, 16mm, United States)
I know, you're a seasonal beast
Like the starfish that drift in with the tide
With the tide
So until your blood runs
To meet the next full moon
Your madness fits in nicely with my own
With my own
Your lunacy fits neatly with my own
My very own
